It’s as if Christmas came early for me this weekend with a trifecta of reading materials landing at our door. First, Anthony Bourdain’s cookbook Appetites, a new July/Aug issue of Departures Magazine (complimentary with Amex cards) and the Häfele catalog simply by request from the website. Stuff to read are my simple joys.
It makes me sad whenever I hear, see or am reminded of anything Anthony Bourdain. So this 2016 cookbook remained on my Wishlist at Amazon for a few years but at 40% off here, I finally decided to get it. It is sad to be reminded of him but I’m glad I got it. Appetites is probably the first cookbook I am reading. Yes, I am reading it and not just looking up recipes. I hand it to Anthony Bourdain that he wrote a cookbook that is lyrical, engaging and funny. I haven’t read the other ones. I am starting with this one because it’s accessible with recipes specifically intended to go from his home to ours. This book is so quintessentially Anthony Bourdain and reminds me of everything we loved about him. I am sorry for our collective loss. Let us celebrate his life with every dish of his we recreate.
I am most intrigued by his Macau-style Pork Chop Sandwich. It looks easy to do. But most of all, I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before. I thought I knew pork.

Departures July/August
It is the magazine hotel issue. So you can expect the assortment of exotic, the grand, the hip and the new with gorgeous photographs from The Ganges to a slew of comfy inns and the like. Perhaps my favorite article is Houses of Style where “nine fashion designers sketch and scribble an ode to their favorites”. Also notable, is Peter Jon Linberg’s Open-Door Policy chronicling how hotels help those most needing it during this time. Even as the industry reels having lost an estimated $25 billion during the first two months of C-19 alone. More about the magazine here.
Häfele
We finally renovated our walk-in closet. The house came with the bare minimum (2 poles and 2 shelves meeting in an L configuration). I may write more about the renovation at another post. For now, I just posted outstanding reviews and photos on Yelp for the locals. Through my excellent talents at googling, I have uncovered that the products we homeowners usually see commercially are just the tip of the iceberg. Beyond this, but (possibly) not far from our reach, there is Häfele. Häfele is a German brand that has been around since 1923. It would be an elevated IKEA and more. They would be what architects and designers use for high-end designer homes, hotels and commercial buildings. Häfele is known internationally as a leading source of hardware, fitting systems, lighting and electronic locking systems.
